Description

Dark fruit dominates an intense, brooding nose with its black currant, black olive, tar and graphite aromas. Luscious, sweet red and dark berries follow through onto an exceptionally complex palate with rich flavours of ripe plums, black cardamom and hints of ground pepper and sweet tobacco. A serious core of cured meat and green olive tapenade add to the attractive savoury character of the structured mid-palate, with notes of milk chocolate coating the mouth. The wine is supple, medium to full-bodied, with beautiful concentration, silky-textured tannins and vibrant acidity to balance.

A Tour of the Boekenhoutskloof Cellar and Winemaking Process

Vineyard

The Boekenhoutskloof Syrah is sourced from our two properties in the Swartland. We acquired these two sites (Porseleinberg and Goldmine) for its unique terroir of rocky bedrock and decomposed mica schist soils. This is only our second vintage claiming Wine of Origin Swartland and our blend comprises of 80% Porseleinberg and 20% Goldmine fruit. The region experienced extreme heatwaves from October 2015 until the end of January 2016, posing a vintage year where phenolic ripeness had to contend with rapidly rising sugar levels. These unusual weather patterns necessitated early green harvesting around the veraison period to ensure low yields, create balance and minimize stress on these dry-land vines.
